Earlier this year, Birkett Freight was off to the races! We had the pleasure of joining FMG Dragon Boats, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, and the Children’s Hospital Foundation for the 2013 Manitoba Dragon Boat Festival. It was truly a first-rate experience at a first-rate venue. Best of all, while we were having fun out on the water, we were able to raise money that is already making a difference in the lives of kids and families living with cancer right here in Manitoba.
We are grateful for the hard work and planning that went in to creating such a great day. However, we are especially grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an important cause. We invite everyone to learn more about this special sport in hopes that you will join us for even more fun and more fundraising in 2014.
What Is Dragon Boat Racing?
Attending a dragon boat race is a great way to spend a day. Participating in a race, however, is an experience of a lifetime. This phenomenal sport is sets teams of 20 paddlers racing each other down a 500-meter aquatic course in ancient Chinese dragon boats. To reach the finish line first, teams must communicate well and work together, so it is no wonder that our close-knit crew here at Birkett had such a good time!
Dragon boating was invented in China over 2000 years ago, and is now the fastest growing aquatic sport in the world. Yearly, over 2,000,000 people around the world participate in dragon boat festivals. Since teamwork is more important than endurance, experience or brute strength to win a race, people of all shapes, ages, and sizes can enter a race after as little as two weeks of training. We certainly never expected to fly through the water as quickly as we did!
A Day to Remember, a Race for a Cause
Of course, the races were more than just good fun. They were also a wonderful opportunity to get together as a community and raise some money to help some local families. In fact, all of the money raised at the event is staying in and going to the benefit of Manitoba. We are proud to be members of our local community, and were thrilled to be able to lend a helping hand in such a fun way.
This year, we raised money for both the CancerCare Manitoba and Children’s Hospital Foundations. We rowed our hearts out in order to do our part to ensure that children battling cancer in Manitoba have access to the absolute best care, research, and support possible. The bravery of the kids and families fighting for recovery is truly inspiring, and we could not be happier to have been able to encourage or provide for them in such a unique way.
